Viewing and celebrating birthdays

On Birthdays you see who has a birthday coming up.

What you see

You see twelve month cards. The first one is the month you are in now, after which the year runs on — the months that have already passed this year are at the end, with the year next to them, because those birthdays only come round again next year.

Each card lists every member with their photo, the day of their birthday and the age they will turn. Anyone whose birthday has already been this month is dimmed and reads Turned … years; for the rest it reads Turns … years. If someone has a birthday today, that row is marked Birthday today. Click a name to open the profile.

The age is left out for members who only show the day and month. Administrators do see everyone's age. In a month with many birthdays you see the first ten; Show … more expands the rest.

Day and month is the norm

By default every environment is set to Always (day and month): every member appears on this page with their day and month, and the year of birth and age stay hidden unless the member chooses otherwise. Members who were previously set to Hidden were moved to Day and month; anyone who had chosen Full date themselves keeps that.

Two things still make the list shorter than your number of members:

• Members without a date of birth do not appear — there is nothing to show. That applies to administrators too.
• If your club sets the option to Member's choice, every member may also hide their birthday completely. As an ordinary member you then only see those who made themselves visible; as an administrator you still see everyone with a date of birth.

Setting what others see

Click your profile photo in the top right, choose My account and stay on the Account tab. Next to Date of birth there is an eye icon; under it you get the question Who can see this? with these options:

• Day and month — date visible, age hidden.
• Full date — including year and age.
• Hidden — only if your club is set to Member's choice.

If you do not see Hidden, the app says so: "Your club always shows birthdays with the day and month. Here you only choose whether your age is shown as well." If you object to this, ask an administrator for an exception.

As an administrator: setting this for the whole club

Go to Settings › Access & privacy › Visibility. Two rows are about birthdays:

• Show birthdays — choose Always (day and month) or Member's choice. Then click Save.
• Date of birth — Show or Hide. This is the starting value for members you add from now on; with the Also apply to existing members button you apply it to your current members as well. The steps are in Setting the default visibility.

An exception for one member

Even with Always (day and month) you can still hide one member's birthday. Open the member via Members, click Edit and set the field Birthday on the birthdays page to Hidden. That exists for when someone objects to their birthday being shown — they have the right to object. See Managing and changing a user's details.

Automatic congratulations

Depending on your club's settings:

• On the dashboard a card appears on someone's birthday. As an ordinary member you only see yourself and your own connections; administrators see everyone. Anyone who has hidden their birthday is left out.
• Some environments send a birthday email on the day itself. It goes to the birthday person, not to the other members.
• Some environments send a push notification in the morning to the birthday person's connections (and to the system administrators). That notification does respect the visibility: a member set to Hidden is not announced.

Frequently asked questions

• Why do I as an administrator see fewer names than I have members? Only members with a date of birth filled in appear in the overview.
• Can I hide my age but still show the date? Yes, choose Day and month — the date is then visible and your age is not.
• I can no longer set my birthday to Hidden. Your club is set to Always (day and month). An administrator can still arrange it for you individually.
• Is it true that this page only shows birthdays for the next 30 days? No, you see a full year ahead: twelve month cards starting with the month you are in now.
• I no longer receive push notifications about birthdays. Look in My account on the Preferences tab, under Connections, for Birthdays of connections. You can switch that off yourself.
