Linking child and parent accounts (family accounts)

Updated on

With family accounts, you link a child to the account of a parent or guardian. The child doesn't need to log in themselves: the parent handles sign-ups, membership fees and personal details from their own account. You make this link as an administrator — members can't do this themselves.

Turning on the feature

Family accounts is a feature you first need to activate. Go to Settings → Features and turn on Family accounts. Don't see the option? Then your package doesn't yet include this feature.

Three types of accounts

Once the feature is on, you choose an account type when creating a member:

  • Member — logs in themselves, participates, handles their own membership fee and email. The default type.
  • Child — for minors. Has no login of their own; the linked parent logs in and handles membership fee and email on the child's behalf.
  • Parent — a parent who isn't a participating member themselves (for example, only to manage a child). Doesn't count towards your member total.

Linking when creating a new member

  1. Go to Members → Add member.
  2. Under Account type, choose Child or Parent.
  3. If you choose Child, Parents of this child appears — search for and select the parent(s). A child can be linked to more than one parent.
  4. If you choose Parent, Children of this parent appears — search for and select the children this parent already has.
  5. Fill in the rest of the details and save.

Doesn't the child have a parent to link yet? You can also do that later — a warning appears that a child without a parent can't be managed by anyone.

Linking afterwards via Edit member

Do both accounts already exist, or do you want to add an extra link?

  1. Open the child's or parent's account via Member overview → Edit member.
  2. Go to the Family section.
  3. Search for the parent (for a child) or the child (for a parent) and click Link.
  4. Want to create a new account and link it right away? Use Create & link in the same section.

To remove a link, open the same Family block and click Unlink next to the parent or child in question.

What the parent sees and can do

Once the link is in place, the parent sees a Family tab in their own account. There, the parent can:

  • view and pay the child's membership fee (see Paying your child's membership fee),
  • sign the child up for or cancel them from an event,
  • update the child's personal details (dietary preferences, allergies, date of birth).

All emails and push notifications about the child (membership fee reminders, confirmations) go to the parent — the child receives nothing themselves, because they have no login of their own.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can a child be linked to multiple parents? Yes. Both parents then see the child's details and both receive the notifications.
  • Can a child get their own login later? Yes — change the account type to Member and set up a password/invitation for the child themselves. The link with the parent remains visible afterwards (as "own login"), but from then on the child handles their own membership fee and email.
  • What happens if I unlink the last parent? The child then (temporarily) has no manager at all. Link a new parent as soon as possible.
  • Does a child or parent account count towards my package? A child account counts as a member. A parent-only account (not a participating member) doesn't count towards your member total.
