Cover and order of an album

Once the photos are in, you can finish the album off: which photo is its face, and in what order they appear.

Step 1: Open Album settings

Open the album and click Album settings in the top right. All photos appear as thumbnails at the bottom.

Step 2: Choose a cover photo

Tap a photo. It gets a border and the label Cover, and that is the photo shown on the album card in the overview.

Tap the same photo again to release the choice. If you pick nothing, the app uses the oldest photo in the album.

Step 3: Set the order

Under Photo order you choose between two settings.

Automatic (date taken) is the default and usually the best choice. The app reads from every photo when it was taken and puts them in time order — exactly the order the day unfolded in, even if you uploaded photos from three different phones.

Photos without a date taken go last. Those are usually not camera photos but, say, a screenshot or a scanned poster, and they do not belong in the middle of the reportage.

Set it myself puts two arrows on every photo to move it forward or back. Handy if you want one particular photo first; for a whole album, automatic is quicker.

Step 4: Save

Click Save. Name, date, description, cover and order are all stored at once.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my album not in alphabetical order? That is deliberate. File names from a camera are IMG_4821.jpg and say nothing; the date taken does.

I chose Set it myself and want to go back. Set the order back to Automatic and save. Your manual order is then dropped.

Who may change this? Anyone who may manage the album. That follows the setting under Settings › Access & privacy › Photo albums, and a group administrator may do it for their own group's albums.
