Viewing customers on the map

Updated on

On Customers you can switch between List and Map. The map view shows where your customers are, so you can judge which visits combine well.

Using the map

  • Business customers appear as a cyan pin, private customers as a green pin.
  • Click a pin to see the customer's name, address and any upcoming appointment, with buttons to view the customer or open directions in Google Maps.
  • Click My location to show your own position on the map.
  • Use the filters to narrow the map down to the customers you need. The map uses exactly the same filters as the list and zooms in on your selection automatically. See Seeing which customers are due for a visit.
  • Enlarge puts the map full screen; Esc or another click takes you back.

The map shows your whole filtered result at once, without pages. Customers whose location couldn't be found aren't on it — those are counted separately.

Planning a route

4planning does not calculate a route: there is no function that puts your day in the handiest order or works out travel times. What there is:

  • The Directions button in a pin's popup opens that one address in Google Maps, where you navigate on from there.
  • Filter your customers by town and the map shows you straight away which visits are close together, so you can pick a sensible order yourself.
  • Ask Planny about your day and he gives you the appointments with their full addresses, roughly in geographical order. He doesn't work out a shortest route either. See What Planny can do for your business.

Why isn't a customer on the map yet?

Addresses are automatically converted into a location on the map (geocoding), but this doesn't happen instantly:

  • A new customer or a changed address is processed in the background. This can take anywhere from a few tens of seconds to a couple of minutes, depending on how many addresses are queued at that moment.
  • If the exact address can't be found, the system places the customer approximately at their town. You'll recognise this by a semi-transparent pin with "Approximate location" in the popup.
  • The counter above the map separately shows how many customers are and aren't on the map ("X on map · Y without location").

Frequently asked questions

  • I just filled in an address, but the customer still isn't on the map. Refresh the page in a few minutes — the location is determined in the background, not instantly on save.
  • The pin isn't at the right address. Check that street, house number, postcode and town are filled in correctly and completely. If something's missing, the system falls back to the town.
  • Can 4planning optimise my day's route? No. You can open navigation for a single customer with one click, but 4planning doesn't calculate a multi-stop route in the handiest order.
  • Does the map view cost extra or need an API key? No, the map and location lookup don't use any paid services.
