Setting up email and push notifications

Updated on

In 4planning you choose what you want to hear about. If you have the app with notifications switched on, you get a push notification on your phone. If we cannot send you a push notification — because you do not have the app, or because notifications are switched off on your phone — you get the same message by email. That way you miss nothing.

How 4planning chooses between push and email

  • App with notifications on – you get a push notification.
  • No app, or notifications switched off on your phone – you get an email.
  • Email on for a topic – you also get it by email, even if you have the app. For some topics, such as news, new events, event changes and polls, Email is on by default. If you do not want those twice, switch Email off there.
  • Push and email switched off for a topic – you get nothing.

A few kinds of messages only ever arrive as a push notification, never as a replacement email. These include chat messages, live match scores (goal, half-time and full-time), messages about photo albums, birthdays of connections, planning board updates and the notice that stock in the shop is running low.

Step 1: Open your notifications

  1. Click your profile or user name at the top right and go to My account.
  2. Open the Preferences tab.

Step 2: See how you receive messages

At the top you see a bar that tells you how notifications currently reach you:

  • You receive notifications as push notifications on your phone. – The app reaches you. If a push notification fails for once, you get an email.
  • We cannot send you push notifications — so you get notifications by email. – Would you rather have them on your phone? Install the app via Download the app and switch notifications on.

Step 3: Choose per topic

  1. Click a topic, for example events or news.
  2. Each kind of notification has two switches: Push and Email.
    • Only Push on: you get a push notification, or an email if that does not work.
    • Push and Email on: you also get it by email when you do have the app.
    • Only Email on: you get it by email.
    • Both off: you get nothing about it.

Note: switching off the Push switch here is not the same as switching off notifications on your phone. You only get an email instead of a push notification if you do not have the app or notifications are switched off on your phone.

Each switch saves itself straight away; there is no separate save button.

Membership fee emails about a direct debit and about a payment that is ready always reach you by email. See Which membership fee emails and notifications do you get?

Switching off from an email

At the bottom of a notification email it says No longer want to receive these messages? Switch them off. That link opens a page where one click on Yes, switch them off turns off push and email for that kind of message. Made a mistake? Click Undo. Gmail and Outlook also show their own unsubscribe button for these emails.

If you got the email because we cannot send you a push notification, the footer says so as well: You are getting this by email because we cannot send you a push notification. With a link to the app.

Frequently asked questions

I have the app, but I still get an email. Then we could not send you a push notification, or Email is on for that topic — for some topics that is the default. The bar at the top of your notifications shows whether push notifications reach you.

Why don't I get chat messages by email? Chat messages and a few other kinds of messages only go out as a push notification. So you only get them with the app and notifications switched on.

I don't want to receive anything about a topic any more. Switch off both Push and Email for that topic. Or click Switch them off at the bottom of a notification email about that topic.
